How PawQuest curates every product — a peek behind the scenes
People ask us all the time: "Do you actually test this stuff, or do you just pick from a catalog?" Fair question. Here's the honest, no-marketing-fluff version of how we choose what goes on PawQuest.
Step 1: the vibe check
We look at hundreds of products a week. 90% get cut for looking generic, boring, or badly designed. If it doesn't feel PawQuest — kawaii, anime, or gamer-adjacent — it's out immediately.
Step 2: supplier vetting
For anything that survives the vibe check, we go deep on the supplier:
- Minimum 4.7★ average across 500+ orders
- Response time under 24 hours to test messages
- Verified factory (not just a reseller)
- Ships from a warehouse we've confirmed has stock
About half the products fail here.
Step 3: materials check
We request material specs. If they can't provide them or the specs sound wrong ("100% cotton" for a stretchy fabric — nope), it's out. See our pet-safe materials guide for what we specifically require.
Step 4: sample order
We buy one. As a real customer. Anonymously. This tells us:
- How long shipping actually takes
- What the packaging looks like
- Whether the product matches the photos
- Whether the materials feel right in hand
Step 5: the pet test
Our testing crew: 4 dogs (a Shiba, a Corgi, a Retriever, a Chihuahua), 3 cats (indoor tabby, aloof Persian, wild rescue), 1 rabbit, 2 guinea pigs. Every product spends at least a week with them.
What we're checking:
- Do they willingly interact with it?
- Does it survive real use?
- Does it wash well?
- Any behavior changes when using it?
Roughly 30% of products fail the pet test.
Step 6: fit + size testing
For anything worn — harnesses, cloaks, collars — we test the size chart on real pets across breeds and share what we found in the product description. This is where the "runs small" / "true to size" notes come from — from actual measurements, not marketing copy.
Step 7: launch decision
If it passed everything, we write real descriptions in our voice, take our own supplementary photos where we can, and list it. Products that make it this far usually stick around for months — we rarely re-shuffle the catalog.
Why we do it this way
The dropshipping industry has a reputation for junk. We're trying to change that in the pet space specifically. Every rejected product means one fewer disappointed customer, and one more reason for pet parents to trust PawQuest as a brand instead of just a store.
